Three keys to fast-track electrification

The U.S. has made impressive strides in clean energy. However, we still need to speed things up to reach our climate goals, especially cutting greenhouse gas emissions. One major way to shrink this gap is through widespread electrification, particularly in our homes. This means swapping out appliances that run on fossil fuels—like gas heaters and stoves—for electric ones powered by clean energy.

Our new report, The Electrification Challenge, highlights three key strategies that can help accelerate this shift to electrification. Here’s a quick overview that includes how smart energy technology is set to play a big role in making it happen.

1. Advancing Clean Energy Deployment

A steady, clean energy supply is essential to making electrification effective at the scale we need. However, getting there isn’t easy—obstacles like permitting delays, interconnection backlogs, labor shortages and limited transmission capacity often slow progress. Tackling these challenges will foster clean energy growth and expand its access to more people, laying the foundation for widespread electrification.

 2. Enhancing Grid Stability with Distributed Energy Resources

Distributed energy resources (DERs)—like rooftop solar, batteries, smart thermostats and heat pumps—let homeowners turn their houses into mini power plants. These systems don’t just save on energy costs; they also help reduce strain on the grid, make homes more comfortable and improve air quality. When paired with smart energy management, DERs enable homeowners to optimize their energy use, providing backup power during outages and boosting overall grid stability, moving us closer to our decarbonization goals.

3. Ensuring Equitable Access to Electrification

For electrification to succeed, it needs to be accessible to everyone—especially underserved households. Historically, the high cost of home upgrades has been a major barrier, and incentives have often been limited or difficult to access. Affordable, smart electrification technologies are crucial to overcoming these hurdles by lowering upfront costs and simplifying energy management. This makes it possible for more households to join the shift to clean energy, making it more accessible and affordable for everyone.

Moving Forward

To meet our climate goals, we need to speed up clean energy deployment, equip homes with grid stabilizing DERs and ensure everyone has access to these technologies. Smart technology solutions are pivotal to achieving these goals and making the energy transition efficient and inclusive.
